Indun Rockshelter (12MO350) 1978

Part of: US Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District VCP

There was no report present for this collection, but there were field notes that describe the site. In addition, while no report was found for this investigation, an associated investigative report (Munson 1976) includes relevant information for Indun Rockshelter. Field notes indicate that archaeological test excavations at Indun Rockshelter (12MO350) occurred from July to August 1978. There were 14 participants for the adult summer field school which was sponsored by the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies, Bloomington, Indiana. Cheryl Munson was the principle field school instructor; however the field notes also mention that Patrick Munson occasionally took over responsibility for directing archaeological activities.

Munson’s 1976 Lake Monroe report included information on the Indun Rockshelter site that reveals how the site was identified and the rationale for undertaking Phase II archaeology. She mentioned that site 12MO350 was not at risk of the wave erosion that impacted many other sites and that it was visible from the lake and that the lake provided an easy avenue of access by boat, thus making the site an easy target for pothunters. The site produced well-preserved human skeletal remains, quite unlike the highly acidic soil open sites in the area. This was considered significant in terms of reconstructing subsistence systems for the area (Munson 1976: 127-128).
