Small Finds, Big Stories

Part of: Society for Historical Archaeology 2019

This collection contains the abstracts of the papers presented in the session entitled "Small Finds, Big Stories," at the 2019 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Buttons, marbles, doll parts, beads: all are rare archaeological finds that capture our attention. Small and infrequently recovered artifacts are the focus of this three-minute forum. While small in size, such artifacts have the potential to open the world of daily life in the past: bodily care, sewing and mending, personal appearance, play, etc. Presenters in this forum are asked to consider small finds and their intimate associations to the body, to daily activities, to the small worlds in which they operate, while also reaching toward the larger stories they tell of intangible aspects of life.
