In 1997, the Air Force, in consultation with the Alaska State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), determined that the Air Force's Forward Operating Base (FOB) mission in Alaska was exceptionally important in the context of bomber warning and defense during the Cold War period (1948- 1989).
