Grasshopper Pueblo Fauna

Part of the Grasshopper Pueblo Fauna project

Creator(s): John Olsen

Year: 2014

Summary

This dataset consists of a portion of the faunal assemblage that was excavated by the University of Arizona at Grasshopper Pueblo. These data were entered into a digital format from the original faunal coding cards on file at the Arizona State Museum. **NB: up to this point we have not reached the cards for the avian fauna; only mammals are included in this dataset.**

In cleaning the digital file February 2018 K. Spielmann undertook the following: The No of Specs column was edited to be a uniform count variable. The “?” entry in this column, when it occurred, was removed and typographical errors were removed. In particular, entries that were identified as ‘skeleton’ or ‘partial skeleton’ (primarily ground squirrels, mice, and woodrats) under the Element variable were changed to a count of 1 in the No of Specs column. The NISP count now is present in the comments box. For many of the skeletons, specific elements are listed in the “Portion Present” column.

When the information from the original index cards was entered into the database, the transcriber noted when a card had a red line through it and also the two occasions on which only one portion of the card had a read line through it. John Olsen confirmed (P.C. 1/25/18) that “John Sparling used a red line through a particular entry to indicate it was a duplicate.” Olsen then did not include these redundant data in calculating the raw numerical counts he used in his dissertation. These duplicate entries have thus been removed from the electronic database posted on tDAR. Two entries had red lines only through the portion present. These elements remain in the dataset; the note is in the comments column.

N.B.: Burning information is contained sometimes in either the ‘Color’ column or the ‘Comments’ column. It’s unclear how systematically burning was reported.
