Artifact Catalog, Test Excavations at Twenty-Eight Sites 1989-1990

Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), St. Louis District, Curation and Archives Analysis Branch serves as the Corps’ Mandatory Center of Expertise for the Curation and Management of Archaeological Collections (MCX-CMAC). As part of its mission, MCX-CMAC assists other USACE districts with the proper curation of their archaeological collections in order to comply with 36 CFR Part 79, Curation of Federally-Owned and Administered Archeological Collections, and repository standards. This report discusses the procedures used to re-house the artifacts and human remains associated with the investigation entitled Test Excavations at Twenty-Eight Sites to Determine Eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places 1989- 1990. The investigation reported herein is property of USACE, Kansas City District, and are housed at the Fort Osage Education Center repository.

The St. Louis laboratory of the Veterans Curation Program (VCP) was originally tasked with rehabilitating these materials in the fall of 2012. The VCP is a MCX-CMAC program operated and staffed through the archaeological contracting firms, Cogstone-Berger, JV. The program employs recently separated veterans for a five-month period, providing on-the-job training in curation and archival techniques. At the time this investigation was completed at the MCX-CMAC, VCP laboratories were not processing investigations with known human remains, due to the sensitive nature of the remains. Since human remains were known to have been collected from two sites in the investigation, 23BE1027 and 23SR108 (Monegaw Cave), it was determined that the entire investigation would instead be processed and labeled by MCXCMAC employees.

Communication was maintained between the MCX-CMAC and the St. Louis VCP laboratories during this project in order to provide relative consistency with the quality and format of the work performed. Variations from the standard VCP procedures will be noted in the appropriate section, although the same standard procedures were followed by both laboratories during the rehousing process of each investigative effort. Upon completion of this curation management project, the investigation was returned to the Fort Osage Education Center for permanent curation.

The procedures employed by the St. Louis VCP to rehouse the archaeological material from the Test Excavations at Twenty-Eight Sites 1989-1990 investigation are discussed in the Artifact Report.
