Addendum To the 1980 Murfreesboro Sewage Treatment Facility Report

Summary
On March 10, 1983, I re-visited the proposed Murfreesboro wastewater treatment facilities site. The purpose of this trip was to assess an archaeological site (RLA Ht78) that had been found in the field immediately north of the original project boundary defined in 1980. The field was planted in young spring wheat, and following the recent rains, surface collecting conditions were excellent. After locating the site area, my first goal was to establish its dimensions. This was accomplished by walking several parallel transects and marking the extreme limits of the artifact distribution (which in this case consisted of ceramics, for the most part). I also noted any concentrations of material. After defining the limits
of the site, I stepped it off and then dug 5 small shovel tests, a foot in diameter and a foot deep, in what seemed to be the area producing the most material.
Although I failed to detect any evidence of buried , intact cultural zones, I recommend the site be more extensively tested. This recommendation is based on the fact that subsurface features and post-holes maybe present. The density of material and the relatively large size of some of the sherds suggest this possibility. The excavation of three to five foot units within the core area should be sufficient to make a judgement of the site's research potential and significance relative to National Register standards.
