Year: 1985

Summary

In February 1984, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville was authorized by the Bi-State Development Agency and the National Park Service to conduct archaeological monitoring of the" excavation for a multi-tier parking facility to be constructed at the north end of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Historic Site. The Investigations were undertaken for the purpose of identifying and preserving any significant archaeological resources relating to the theme of western expansion and dating to before 1849. No such resources were encountered which would be impacted by construction activities. Monitoring investigations resulted in the judgment that all fill removed from the site either was previously disturbed by urban development or was culturally sterile.
