Summary

A pedestrian archeological survey covering 2,302 acres (932 hectares) was conducted at the Camp Bullis Military Reservation from June 7 to August 4, 1999, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. This survey recorded 25 new sites and revisited 2 previously recorded sites. These 27 sites consist of 17 prehistoric components, 7 historic components, and 3 multicomponent sites.

Two prehistoric components—41BX1338 and 41BX1344—are recommended as being eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places pending testing of their archeological deposits. Site 41BX1338 is a large prehistoric lithic scatter with a burned rock midden. The burned rock midden appears to be undisturbed, retaining much of its integrity. Associated artifacts date to the Early, Middle, and Late Archaic periods. Site 41BX1344 is a rock shelter along Meusebach Creek associated with a prehistoric lithic scatter situated across the creek. The deposits in front of the shelter contain artifacts associated with a potentially isolable Late Archaic occupation. A third prehistoric site, 41BX372, is of unknown eligibility because most of it is outside the survey area. The remaining 17 prehistoric sites are ineligible.

One of the historic components—41BX1322—is considered to be eligible for National Register listing. Site 41BX1322 is a series of World War I-era training trenches. The other nine historic components are ineligible.
