Summary

The purpose of the present study is to provide detailed information regarding the archaeological/historical resources within Bellows AFS. The field work was focused in areas not previously examined for the presence of historic properties and in areas of future planned development identified by the Bellows AFS Master Plan.

On April 18, 1986, a preliminary surface reconnaissance of the project area was conducted by PHRI Senior Archaeologist Alan E. Haun. Ph.D.. and PHRI Supervisory Archaeologist and Project Director Robert E. Hurlbett, with James P. Taylor of the Head Quarters Pacific Air Force (PACAF) Contracting Center. Contracts Management Branch. The field work was conducted between May 12 and June 9, 1986, by a five- to seven-person field crew under the on-site supervision of Robert Hurlbett. Overall direction was provided by Alan Haun and by PHRI Principal Archaeologist Paul H. Rosendahl. Ph.D. Approximately 1,000 labor-hours were expended and c. 888 acres (ac) were examined during the survey and test excavations field work. In addition. seven new sites were recorded; two previously identified sites were assigned State of Hawaii site numbers; 17 surface structural features were mapped in detail; and 322 core tests and 22 test excavation units, including five stratigraphic facings. were completed.
