Summary
From May 1999 through November 2002, Great Lakes Archaeological Research Center conducted Phase I archaeological survey and Phase II archaeological evaluations within the preferred alternative route for State Trunk Highway (STH) 26 reconstructions in Dodge, Jefferson, and Rock counties, Wisconsin. Archaeological investigations were conducted to partially fulfill requirements obtaining from the execution of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (P.L. 89-665) as amended and 36 CFR, part 800 which serves to implement the act. A total of 47 archaeological
sites were identified within the preferred alternative as a result of the archaeological survey efforts detailed in this document. Phase II evaluations of eight sites within the preferred alternative route were
conducted concurrent with the Phase I survey to evaluate the eligibility of these sites for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). A testing program consisting of controlled test excavations and/or machine assisted removal of large portions of the plow zone was used to asses the subsurface integrity of the eight sites. Resulting from these efforts, six archaeological sites within the preferred alternative were determined eligible for listing on the NRHP.
