POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS AT AREA 6 OF PUEBLO SALADO, SITE AZ T: 12: 47 (ASM), SOUTHERN ARIZONA

Summary

Soil samples from adobe-walled structures, surface rooms, pit structures,

a pit house, extramural fire pits, a trash pit, and a midden at Area 6 of Pueblo

Salado, Site AZ T: 12 : 47 (ASM), were examined for pollen, phytolith, and/or

macrofloral remains. Four pieces of groundstone also were washed to recover

phytoliths. Area 6 is believed to have been occupied for an extended period of

time. Feature 20, a field house, is thought to date to the late Sacaton or early

Soho phase, and represents the earliest occupation at Pueblo Salado. Other

structures at Area 6 architecturally belong mostly to the Civano and Polvoron

phases, although an intrusive pit house, Feature 67, may date to the

Protohistoric period. The majority of the features at Area 6 were located within

what is believed to have been a compound enclosure. Area 8/9 at Pueblo Salado

also exhibited a compound with Civano and Polvoron phase features. Pollen,

phytolith, and macrofloral analyses of Area 6 samples are used to provide

information concerning subsistence strategies.
