Summary
Archaeological data recovery investigations were conducted at 38CH679-3, during June-July 1995 by archaeologists from Brockington and Associates, Inc. Site 38CH679-3 occupies 0.55 ac/0.22 ha between the Charleston Country Club Golf Course and the existing McLeod Plantation complex, Charleston, South Carolina. The work was carried out under contract with Hawthorne Properties, Ltd. of Charleston, South Carolina, and funded by Historic Charleston Foundation (HCF). Investigations were undertaken at two areas within
38CH679-3 thought to represent the remains of two structures, a main house and a slave residence or kitchen. A probable builders trench extending 50 by 15 ft was encountered in the east central portion of the site. Archival and archaeological evidence suggest that this structure may have been built between 1740 at the earliest and 1815 at the latest. The artifact assemblage
suggests that the structure was occupied between 1750 and 1780.
A possible slave residence or kitchen appear to have been present east and north of the main house. This structure apparently served the main house in some ancillary manner. Interestingly, archaeological evidence suggests the main house was razed prior to destruction of this smaller slave residence.
Excavation and archival research conducted at 38CH679-3 have provided an excellent sample of important archaeological information that can contribute to the knowledge of McLeod Plantation. Future ground disturbing activities at 38CH679-3 will not result in the loss of any significant information. Further management consideration of the site is not recommended.
