Intensive Cultural Resources Survey of the Old Fort Drive Extension (S-18-662)
Summary
"In April 2007, Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted a cultural resources survey of
the proposed Old Fort Drive Extension Project in Dorchester County, South Carolina. This work
was conducted through the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) in advance
of road construction activities. ... The Senior Architectural Historian conducted an intensive architectural survey of all
buildings and structures within a 300-foot-wide area to each side of the proposed centerline of
the Old Fort Drive Extension Project. This 600-foot-wide area is the architectural survey
universe. The archaeological survey universe extends 75 feet on either side of the centerline of
the existing portion of Old Fort Drive. The archaeological survey universe for the proposed Old
Fort Drive Extension extends 50 feet on either side of the staked centerline and is 100 feet wide
along its entire length. Investigators examined the archaeological survey universe through
surface inspection and systematic shovel testing. ..."

Notes
General Note: "Brockington and Associates, Inc., conducted an intensive cultural resources survey of the Old Fort Drive Extension Project in Dorchester County, South Carolina. There are no surveyeligible structures within the architectural survey universe. We identified one archaeological site (38CH2065/38DR348) within the archaeological survey universe. We recommend site 38CH2065/38DR348 eligible for the NRHP. Construction of the Old Fort Drive Extension Project as currently designed will impact and adversely affect a historic property (site 38CH2065/38DR348). Spencer Branch will continue to be an important part of the drainage of the project area. Any road construction plans associated with the Old Fort Drive Extension Project should be designed to minimize further impact to the landscape features of site 38CH2065/38DR348. If mitigation of some or all of these remnant landscape features is necessary, we recommend development of a contextual history of inland rice fields in the Dorchester and Charleston County area, and possibly a more wide-reaching context of inland rice fields in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Additionally, soil samples may be taken from the rice fields to help answer some important questions about the inland rice field industry. All proposed mitigation of adverse effects to site 38CH2065/38DR348 will be developed in consultation with SCDOT and SCDAH."
