Summary

This Request for Determination of Eligibility for the San Antonio Terrace Archaeological District as a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) district is being submitted to facilitate management of cultural resources that could be affected by the construction of Peacekeeper Rail Garrison and Small Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) test facilities. Flight tests of both the Small ICBM and Peacekeeper Rail Garrison systems will be conducted at Vandenberg Air Force Base (AFB) to verify the capabilities of the mobile launch facilities. Test facilities will be constructed on San Antonio Terrace in the northern part of Vandenberg AFB. Existing facilities (Stage Processing Facilities A and B, Test Pad 1, and the Missile Assembly Building) were built as part of the Peacekeeper Multiple Protective Shelter Mode; cultural resource work for those facilities was performed by HDR Sciences (1980) and Chambers Consultants and Planners (1984). Proposed new Peacekeeper facilities include a Train Alert Shelter, Test Pad 2, and an Integration and Refurbishment Facility. New railroad lines, roads, utilities, communication lines, and water lines will also be required. New facilities for the Small ICBM consist of an alternate launch facility and a Mobility Study Area (Tetra Tech, Inc. 1987: Figure 2.2-1).
