Summary
In early February, 1989, Archaeological Research Services, Inc. completed an archaeological survey of a 3 1/4 mile long segment of the proposed Outer Loop Freeway along the 99th Avenue between McDowell Road and Camelback Road west of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. The 1114 acre survey parcel (17,160 ft north-south by 2640-3440 ft east-west) was evaluated as part of Arizona Department of Transportation Project 101L MA H0806 01D RAM-600-0-313. As a result of the field survey, two small historic artifact scatters dating to the 1920's, and four isolated prehistoric ceramic and lithic artifact occurrences were noted and determined to be non-significant cultural resources. Documentary research produced evidence that a prehistoric Hohokam canal and two historic canals may be present within the project area. Cultural resources clearance is not recommended for the proposed undertaking due to the potential presence of these canals; clearance could be recommended upon implementation of an archaeological testing and monitoring program.
