A Cultural Resources Survey of BIA Branch of Roads Project SRIR Consolidated No. 16, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Frank B. Fryman

Year: 1988

Summary

As one of the Bureau of Indian Affairs' affirmative actions to meet its responsibilities for compliance with section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), as amended, a cultural rsources survey was carried out on September 20, 28, and October 13, 1988 for a proposed BIA Branch of Roads reconstruction and paving project on the Salt River Project-Maricopa Indian Reservation in Maricopa County, Arizona. The purpose of the survey was to identify and evaluate any cultural resources located within the proposed project's area of potential effects and to determine what measures might be necessary to avoid or mitigate possible adverse effects should it be found that significant cultural resources are located within the project area. The cultural resources survey and evaluation process, as documented by this report, is intended to meet the procedures specified in the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's regulations at 36 CFR Part 800 ("Protection of Historic Properties") for federal agency compliance with section 106 of NHPA.

This report describes the proposed BIA road project (federal undertaking), presents the results of the cultural resource survey and other efforts to identify cultural resources that might be affected by the project, and then makes recommendations for completing the section 106 compliance process.
