Cultural Resource Survey Along 43rd Avenue Between Buckeye Road and Van Buren Street Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): A. E. Rogge; Kirsten Winter
Year: 2000
Summary
The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is proposing upgrades along approximately 1 mile of 43rd Avenue between Buckeye Road and Van Buren Street. The upgrades include replacing or overlaying existing pavement; widening the roadbed to a standard width of approximately 65 feet; installing new sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; and replacing or relocating some utilities beneath the street surface. The City of Phoenix retained URS Dames & Moore to conduct a cultural resources survey to assist the City in complying with the Arizona Antiquities Act by determining whether any significant archaeological or historical sites might be affected by the project. The project involves replacing two irrigation ditches with buried concrete pipe. One of these ditches is a canal owned and operated by the Roosevelt Irrigation District (RID). The other canal is a gunite lined ditch operated by the Salt River Project (SRP) but held in federal ownership under the administration of the Bureau of Reclamation. This report also is intended to assist the Bureau of Reclamation in complying with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
