An Archaeological Analysis of the Proposed Florence Water Treatment Plant

Summary

Northland Research, Inc. has conducted an archaeological impact analysis of the proposed site of the Florence Water Treatment Plant, and its two associated delivery lines. The plant will repose on three acres (1.2 hectares) of land south of the City of Florence, in Section 12, Township 5 South, Range 9 East (Figure One). In that place, the plant site is hard by the north bank of the Salt-Gila Aqueduct, where it runs along the high Pleistocene terrace overlooking Florence and the broad Gila River valley beyond to the north. The two delivery lines run down the terrace bluff from the plant site into Florence, following the alignments of the two branches of Highway 80-89, which separate at a "Y" just east of the plant site. Within their construction right-of-way, planned to be 150 feet (46 meters) in width, the two delivery lines include 19 acres (7.7 hectares) of land. Our analysis included a field inspection of these sites, and a detailed examination of published and unpublished data from previous investigations in the area, of which there have been comparatively many (Debowski et al. 1976; Doelle 1976; Doyel 1974: Stein 1979; Teague and Crown 1983).
