Historic Building Documentation, Building 4115 Guardhouse, Fort Sam Houston, Texas

Summary

This archaeological and historic documentation for Building 4115 is part of a collection of survey documents of Significant Historic American Buildings at Fort Sam Houston.

Building 4115, the Guardhouse, has been determined eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under national register Criteria A. Built in 1942, the structure was originally constructed as a guardhouse concurrent with seven large warehouses. The warehouse complex was built under a separate command and operated under a variety of names: the San Antonio General Depot (later the San Antonio Quartermaster Depot and the San Antonio Army Service Forces Depot). The depot supported the war effort as the center for procurement of mattresses and mattress pads for the entire United States and for purchase of all clothing produced within its area of distribution. The structure represents the expansion of Fort Sam Houston to meet the wartime needs of the installation.
