Author(s): John M. Lindly; Michael S. Foster; Douglas R. Mitchell; Cara Schmidt
Year: 2002
Summary
This report presents the results of archaeological monitoring at a project area located at the northeast comer of Kyrene and Elliot Roads in Tempe, Arizona. The monitoring was conducted during waterline construction and landscaping around the Kyrene Generating Station at the request of Salt River Project. The project area is located adjacent to and within the boundaries of the Hohokam village site of Los Guanacos (AZ U:9:116 [ASM]), located in Section 10, T1S R4E, Gila and Salt River Baseline and Meridian, USGS 7.5' Tempe Quadrangle.
This monitoring was conducted due to significant remains found during excavation at a portion of Los Guanacos. Excavation in the Kyrene Generating Station revealed an extremely rich material culture that was part of at least two residential neighborhoods composed of several courtyard groups. In total, 232 features, including 118 mortuary features, were documented in the Pole Yard Locus, a 10-acre area where utility poles had previously been stored (Lindly et. al 2003).
Eight features, four prehistoric features with associated Hohokam artifacts and four ash features without associated artifacts, were exposed and recorded during the installation of an effluent water line associated with the KEP (Kyrene Expansion Project) Monitoring. No human remains were discovered during construction associated with this project and no further work is recommended.
This is the revised report dated January 2003, the original report was dated October 2002.
