Summary
Entranco conducted archaeological data recovery at AZ U:10:123 (ASM) during January and February 2001. AZ U:10:123 (ASM) is a Hohokam habitation and limited activity site located within the corridor of the proposed Red Mountain Freeway, Gilbert to Higley Road segment in east Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona. As a result of testing, the site was previously recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D. The data recovery was conducted to mitigate the potential impacts from construction of the Red Mountain Freeway and included the investigation of 12 features, eight of which were newly recorded. Fieldwork consisted of detailed mapping, surface collection, trenching, mechanical stripping, and hand excavation of the portion of the site located within the project corridor. The features, which included two pithouses, eight pits, one homo, and one area of sheet trash, appear to date from the Hohokam pre-Classic to Classic period transition. The results of data recovery indicate that AZ U:10:123 (ASM) functioned as a small, temporary encampment that was possibly associated with nearby resource processing areas. Although artifact and other analyses have yet to be completed, preliminary results of the data recovery indicate that the National Register qualities of AZ U:10:123 (ASM) were fully recovered and no additional cultural resource investigation is necessary.
