Cultural Resources Survey of 4,423 Acres and National Register Testing at Five Prehistoric Sites, Camp Bullis Military Reservation, Bexar and Comal Counties, Texas

Summary

Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted archeological investigations at the Camp Bullis Military Reservation from January to June 2001. The investigations consisted of a pedestrian survey of 4,423 acres (1,789 hectares) in Training Areas 1B, 5D, 5E, 7, 8B, 10, and 11B and National Register test excavations at sites 41BX1031, 41BX1032, 41BX1035, 41BX1220, and 41CM211. The survey documented 28 new archeological sites and revisited and reassessed 43 previously recorded sites. The 71 sites consist of 55 prehistoric and 16 historic components. It is recommended that 3 of the prehistoric components be considered potentially eligible or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D. Two of these sites, 41BX419/421 and 41BX1251, include karst features that contain human remains. Although the accompanying surface scatters of artifacts are not archeologically significant, the deposits within the caves may contain important information. The third site, 41BX1338, consists of a lithic scatter and burned rock midden that appears to be intact and may yield significant data. In all three caves, more investigations and documentation would be needed to determine actual information yield potential and provide full National Register assessments.
