Ports and Settlements in the Gulf of Oristano. A Coastal and Underwater Archaeological Approach

Summary

In recent years, multidisciplinary teams from the universities of Cagliari and Sassari (Sardinia, Italy) have undertaken research on ancient Sardinian, initiating a series of Global Archaeology research campaigns. Major attention has been placed on the area surrounding Oristano (Central-West Sardinia), focusing on maritime landing sites and port facilties but also on local settlement dynamics in a territory characterised by wetlands and large lagoons, some of which formed during historical times. This geographical area is characterised by a high concentration of ancient cities as well as a high number of rural settlements connected to road networks, resource exploitation, port organisation, and installations distinct from the city with which they were related (and sometimes subjected to relocation). The frequent geomorphological changes to which such areas were often subjected have also been considered. The research has involved Neapolitanus port, the territory of Neapolis, the zone of Tharros and the Korakodes port area
