Cultural Resources Survey for Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, New Jersey
Author(s): Baystate Environmental Consultants
Year: 1994
Summary
A Cultural Resources Survey (CRS) has been conducted for Naval Air Engineering Station (NAES) Lakehurst, Ocean County, New Jersey. NAES Lakehurst was established in 1921, and until 1961 was the center for the Navy's lighter-than-air (LTA) program on the east coast. This CRS consists of a review of published and archival sources, a building survey, a preliminary walkover inspection of known or suspected archaeological sites, an evaluation of the potential eligibility of the buildings and structures, the identified archaeological sites, and a model for predicting the distribution of potentially significant archaeological sites at NAES Lakehurst.
The building survey addressed the residential, administrative, and LTA-related structures at NAES Lakehurst. Many of these structures were constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, during the height of the LTA program at NAES Lakehurst. Although the buildings-express limited variation in style and materials, they form a coherent assemblage that retains essential integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feel, and association. The buildings at NAES Lakehurst thus define a LTA Historic District that is potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Approximately 112 buildings and structures are located in this potential district. The District boundaries are very similar to the original layout adopted in 1920.
The known archaeological sites at NAES Lakehurst all belong to the historic period. These sites include an eighteenth- century road, a mid-nineteenth-century dwelling, an undated sawmill, facilities related to the Russian Imperial Army and United States Army Proving Grounds and Camp Kendrick, and the Hindenburg crash site. All but the crash site are assessed as potentially significant archaeological sites.
