Stage 1B Cultural Resource Investigations for the Verona Research Facility, Town of Verona, Oneida County, New York
Author(s): Carolyn A. Pierce
Year: 1999
Summary
Stage 1A cultural resource investigations were conducted in 1997 for the Verona Research Facility located in the Town of Verona, Oneida County. The Facility was investigated in conjunction with the potential excessing of properties associated with Air Force Research Laboratory/Rome Research Site in Rome, New York. The Facility was stratified in terms of archaeological sensitivity. While most of the Facility acreage consisted of designated wetlands, several locations had potentially well-drained soil qualities and topographic settings that might argue for potential attractiveness to prehistoric occupation and/or activities. The mid-section of the Facility has been highly disturbed by various episodes of construction and development since the 1950s. The potential for locating historic cultural material, refuse or foundations, was considered to be high in six locations where nineteenth century farmsteads once stood.
Stage IB field investigations (shovel testing) were conducted at the Facility in November and December 1998. The results of the testing revealed the presence of historic material at three of the six historic farm locations and prehistoric material (a lithic scatter) adjacent to a tributary to Brandy Brook (Area K). Stage 2 site evaluation investigations are recommended for three farmstead areas (Farms 3, 4, and 5) and at the Area K prehistoric archaeological site.
