Stage 2 Cultural Resource Investigations for the Area K Site (A065-22-0101) Verona Research Facility, Town of Verona, Oneida County, New York
Author(s): Lu Engineers
Year: 2002
Summary
Stage 1A and IB cultural resource investigations were conducted at the Verona Research Facility, Town of Verona, Oneida County, New York for the United States Air Force Rome Research Site. These investigations resulted in the identification of a prehistoric archaeological site, the Area K Site (A065-22-0101). Stage 2 site evaluation investigations, consisting of close-interval (10-foot) shovel testing and excavation of 22 test units across the site, determined that the locus was utilized, primarily, for late stage tool manufacture and maintenance of tools (mostly of Esopus silicified shale), In addition, a very large charcoal feature, Feature 2, provided a calibrated radiocarbon calendar date of approximately 1880 BC assigning an occupation date during the Late Archaic or Transitional period(s). The strong possibility for the recovery of additional features in conjunction with the established presence of formal chipped stone tools and high densities of manufacturing debris suggests that the Area K Site contains the potential for future research. Future research at the site would provide refinement of site function, identification of discrete activity areas and would further the understanding of the relationship of the site to others in the region. The site possesses the characteristics that would make it eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, avoidance of the site is recommended or, if that is not possible, then data recovery operations should be undertaken at the site.
