Butser Ancient Farm: A Unique Research & Educational Establishment

Author(s): Peter J. Reynolds

Editor(s): Peter G. Stone; Phillippe G. Planel

Year: 1999

Summary

Reynolds opens the debate of experimental archaeology and science as a cooperation in demonstration areas and open air museums. He describes which farms are already open and how they were used. Little Butser, Hampshire was used as an open demonstrative area for scientists and public, while in Hillhampton Down the area was used as an Open Air Museum. Comparing both places, issues and advantages came up. On the one hand, free demonstrative areas give a lot of freedom to decide which projects and experiments are conducted, while the financial aspect is rather difficult. Open Air Museums might receive the necessary funding, however, it binds the scientists to a collaboration with others, like the county council. Reynolds describes the case of different visions and goal for the Museum, which led to problems in undertaking the experimental archaeology and the understanding of its science.

Reynolds describes the methodology as a cycle of evidence, hypothesis, and experiments.

The core programs include grain storage, constructs, and earthworks. He also describes the advantages and disadvantages with schools, universities, and the public.
