VAFB-1973-01: Excavations at the Barka Slough Site, SBA-1010, Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, a Preliminary Report

Author(s): Laurence W. Spanne

Year: 1973

Summary

This document discusses the emergency excavations conducted at SBA-1010 the Barka Slough Site. The excavation yielded stratified cultural deposits buried five feet below the surface. The occupational sequence, with an estimated age of between 3000 B.C. and A.D. 500, produced abundant remains of what appear to be those of Canadian Elk, along with Mule Deer and other mammals. The artifact assemblage suggests hunting, butchering, and hide processing activities at the site which was probably occupied during the late summer or early fall.
