Archaeological Analysis of a Legacy Collection from CA-SOL-313
Summary
Site CA-SOL-313 was located at the far western end of Travis Air Force Base, on the eastern side of the David Grant Medical Center grounds. The location was originally recorded and evaluated as a prehistoric archaeological site associated with a vernal pool and was recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 (Roop et al. 1989). Data recovery was conducted at the site, as impacts from construction of the medical center could not be avoided (Roop et al. 1989). A total of 136 items were surfacecollected from the site; no subsurface deposit or features were found.
As part of the Travis AFB Fence-to-Fence Contract Option Year 2 tasks (Contract No. FA8903-14- R-0027), Far Western Anthropological Research Group, Inc., (Far Western) re-analyzed the SOL-313 collection. This included a review of the available information on the site’s setting and inspection of the collection for intentional modification and/or use, as well as an exploration of the possible origins of the site assemblage. The results of this analysis indicate that the items recovered from SOL-313 are most likely historic-era and/or modern quarry material, rather than prehistoric artifacts. Whether or not a prehistoric site exists – or ever existed – at the location of SOL-313 cannot be determined with the data at hand. If the items recovered from SOL-313 do represent a prehistoric (or historic-era) site, there does not appear to be any additional data potential in the collection. Therefore, Far Western does not recommend permanent curation of the assemblage.
