Archaeological Testing at AZ U:10:91 (ASM), in Queen Creek, Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): Chris North
Year: 2001
Summary
This report summarizes archaeological testing at AZ U:10:91 (ASM), a small Hohokam site in Queen Creek, Arizona. At the request of Environmental and Earth Science Consultants Ltd., SWCA conducted archaeological testing at AZ U:10:91 (ASM) to determine if subsurface cultural deposits are present and whether the site is eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
Soil Systems, Inc. identified AZ U:10:91 (ASM) in October, 2000 during a 12 acre survey of former agricultural land (Bretemitz 2000). AZ U:0:91 (ASM) is on privately-owned land proposed as the location of a new school, which will be incorporated into the Queen Creek United School District. After identifying and recording the site, Soil Systems, Inc. recommended AZ U:10:91 (ASM) as potentially eligible to the NRHP.
Two large prehistoric Hohokam villages, Manchester Ruin and Rittenhouse Ruin, are within one-quarter mile of AZ U:10:91 (ASM). Based on the small number of surface artifacts and apparent absence of features at AZ U:10:91 (ASM), the site is probably associated with either Manchester Ruin or Rittenhouse Ruin.
SWCA identified no subsurface features or significant subsurface cultural deposits during testing at AZ U:10:91 (ASM). Consequently, SWCA recommends the site as ineligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places. No further archaeological work is recommended for AZ U:10:91 (ASM).
