Summary

This report presents the results of archaeological data recovery at two prehistoric loci in Phoenix, Arizona. The major component investigated is a portion of the Classic period Hohokam village of Casa Buena (AZ T:12:37(ASM)). The smaller loci contains two temporal/functional components, a late Colonial period fieldhouse site and a Colonial to Sedentary period transition farmstead. The sites are located within the Squaw Peak Parkway corridor. The data recovery program was funded by the City of Phoenix (Contract No. 37517).

Casa Buena was an important Classic period village within Canal System 2 and contained public architecture in the form of a platform mound. The excavations identified a large residential area containing a chronological sequence of architectural styles occupied from the early Soho to the late Civano and possibly the recently proposed Polvorón phase. A large inhumation cemetery containing fifty-seven individuals was investigated and reported. A study of the formation processes, morphological typology and function of hornos is presented. A large caliche borrow-pit and preparation area is also examined. The ceramic analysis focuses on establishing a microseriation of Classic period assemblages, which is applied to an examination of changing site structure.

An examination of the changing nature of settlement in this area of Canal System 2 as reflected by the fieldhouse and farmstead components of Locus 2 and the Classic period village of Casa Buena are discussed. The development of local land-use patterns and changing settlement structure lead to the development of a testable model of the processes of growth within large canal systems.
