The Building of the City of Orthez
Author(s): Nadine Béague
Year: 2018
Summary
The goal of the expose is to illustrate the evolution of this particular urban area, using archeological sources such as preventive excavations, one-time digs, prospections, and architecture specialists as well as historical records.
The idea is to measure as accurately as possible the impact of important historical events, particularly during the two eras that have influenced the history of Orthez the most: when it was the capital city of the principality of Béarn, then during the period where it was a cornerstone of meridional Protestantism.
There are three main objectives:
Understand the territorial dynamics that have led the city of Orthez to flourish and become the capital city of the viscounty of Béarn during the 13th century.
Pinpoint where the territory has been modified due to being the capital and then a cornerstone of Protestantism.
Find out in which manner historical and social political events have shaped the city and its surroundings.
