Year: 2018
Summary
To better understand the built environment of Fort St. Joseph, an eighteenth-century mission, garrison, and trading post located along the St. Joseph River, the architectural remains have been a focus of excavation over the past ten years. The remains discovered through excavation at the fort will be discussed as they offer insights on the layout and size of buildings uncovered as well as the techniques and materials used in the buildings’ construction by the fort occupants. Knowledge gleaned from this architectural analysis has also assisted in providing information on the buildings’ functions at the fort. This analysis informs scholars on how occupants were expressing their identity through architecture at an important frontier outpost on the edge of empire.
