Author(s): Michael J. Prouty
Year: 2018
Summary
In the spring of 2017, Alpine Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (Alpine) completed an inventory and site testing of the Hanging Flume and associated sites in western Montrose County, Colorado. The Hanging Flume was a 10-mi.-long bracket flume that was suspended along the cliff walls above the San Miguel and Dolores river canyons. It was constructed between 1889 and 1891 by the Montrose Placer Mining Company in association with a hydraulic gold placer mining operation along the banks of the Dolores River. Fieldwork identified additional construction elements beneath the flume and archaeological deposits at blacksmithing sites and construction camps. This presentation will highlight the nature and logistics of camps and specific work area associated with the construction of the Hanging Flume between 1889 and 1891.
