Summary
This report presents the results of archaeological site file search and the development of a testing and monitoring plan for the Hope VI housing project. The site file search and testing/monitoring plan development was conducted at the request of the City of Phoenix, City Managers Office under an on-call archaeological services contract between the City and SWCA, Inc, (Contract no. 101005). This project will receive funding from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) so compliance with section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is required. The project was assigned the number PGM 2002-16 by the City of Phoenix Archaeology Section.
The site file search resulted in the documentation of one archaeological site in the project area - the La Villa site (AZ T:12:14 [ASM]). In addition, there were three prehistoric sites within one-half mile of the project area. Due to the presence of the prehistoric Hohokam site of La Villa in the northwest comer of the project area, SWCA recommends that the area be tested for archaeological remains prior to construction. The proposed testing plan includes the northwest boundary of the project area that encompasses the approximate boundary of the La Villa site and a 250 ft wide buffer beyond this area. The buffer is recommended in order to better define the boundaries of the site. SWCA also recommends that a qualified archaeologist be present to monitor demolition and leveling in the area.
