Archaeological Testing of a Proposed Salt River Project Substation Location Near Las Canopas, AZ U:9:46 (ASU) Phoenix, Arizona
Author(s): Thomas N. Motsinger
Year: 1991
Summary
Between April 1 and April 6, 1991, an archaeological testing program was performed by SWCA Inc., Environmental Consultants, at a portion of Las Canopas (AZ U:9:46 [ASU]), a prehistoric Hohokam village site located in the Phoenix Basin just south of the Salt River. The work was performed under contract with Salt River Project (SRP) on private land that SRP is considering purchasing and using as a location for a future substation. The project was administered by Dr. Judy L. Brunson, Salt River Project Archaeologist, and Mr. David H. Greenwald, SWCA Senior Archaeologist. Field work was supervised by Thomas N. Motsinger, with a crew consisting of Stewart Deats and Andy Arias, SWCA archaeologists. Mr. Arias also served as backhoe operator for the project. No subsurface features were identified in any of the trenches, though a few prehistoric artifacts and charcoal were encountered. Archaeological clearance is recommended for the parcel.
