Summary
This document presents the results of archaeological testing conducted to assess the impact of a proposed waterline on AZ U:1:308 (ASM). The project area is located in the Town of Cave Creek, Maricopa County, Arizona. SWCA, Inc. conducted the testing at the request of United Homes, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona to assess the nature and extent of the site within the proposed pipeline corridor. The testing was confined to the portion of AZ U:1:308 (ASM) within the proposed water pipeline corridor, on land controlled by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). AZ U:1:308 (ASM) is a large Hohokam habitation and agricultural site (also known as AZ U:1:2 (ASU)) that encompasses an area over one mile long by one half mile wide, and includes private, State, and Federally owned land.
The testing program included the surface collection of artifacts and the excavation of three 50m long backhoe trenches. Results of the testing indicate the portion of AZ U:1:308 (ASM) within the corridor consists of a low to moderate density, surface artifact scatter with no subsurface cultural deposition. No features were found either above or below the site surface. Based on the testing results, no further work is recommended for the portion of AZ U:1:308 (ASM) located within the water pipeline corridor.
