Summary
This report presents the results of a Class III archaeological survey of a parcel of land located near the Anthem Way interchange on Interstate 17, near the Town of New River, Maricopa County, Arizona. A proposed testing plan for site AZ T:4:253 (ASM) is also included within this document. The survey was conducted at the request of the Del Webb Corporation of Scottsdale, Arizona prior to development associated with the adjacent Anthem residential community. The parcel encompasses approximately 160 acres of privately owned land. The survey was conducted under an Arizona Antiquities Act permit (1999-16bl).
Three sites, AZ T:4:252 (ASM), AZ T:4:253 (ASM), and AZ T:4:254 (ASM) were located within the project area. Sites AZ T:4:252 (ASM), AZ T:4:253 (ASM), and AZ T:4:254 (ASM) consist of a dispersed lithic procurement and reduction area, a prehistoric sherd and lithic scatter, and a historic/modem structure foundation and trash dump. Site AZ T:4:253 (ASM) is considered potentially eligible for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Avoidance is recommended for AZ T:4:253 (ASM). If avoidance is not possible, archaeological testing is recommended to determine if the site is eligible for inclusion to the NRHP. Sites AZ T:4:252 (ASM) and AZ T:4:254 (ASM) are not considered eligible for inclusion to the NRHP, and no further work is recommended for these sites. Sixteen isolated artifact occurrences were found within the project area; no further work is recommended for the isolated occurrences.
