An Archaeological Survey of 5.8 Miles of Sanitary Sewer Line Right-of-Way, Old Nogales Highway Colonia, Pima County, Arizona
Author(s): India S. Hesse
Year: 1999
Summary
On September 17, 1999 SWCA, Inc. completed a Class III archaeological survey in the Old Nogales Highway Colonia, Pima County, Arizona at the request of Black and Veatch. The purpose of the work was to determine if any cultural resources existed that might be adversely impacted by the construction of a sanitary sewer system. Prior to the commencement of fieldwork, archival research was conducted at the Arizona State Museum (ASM) in order to see if any portions of the project area had previously been surveyed, and if any previously recorded sites were known in the project area.
Six isolated occurrences (IOs) of prehistoric and historical archaeological resources were recorded during the survey. The six IOs are not considered archaeologically significant according to NRHP guidelines. However, due to the concentration of IOs in the only area of high ground visibility, the density and abundance of previously recorded archaeological sites within the immediate vicinity of the project area, and the potential for buried cultural deposits throughout the project right-of-way, SWCA recommends that a professional archaeological monitor be present during any ground disturbing activities throughout the duration of construction. In addition, SWCA recommends that a site-specific testing plan be formulated and implemented in the area immediately adjacent to site AZ BB:13:120 (ASM).
