Author(s): Michael Stubing

Year: 1999

Summary

This document presents the preliminary results of archaeological testing conducted at site AZ T:12:117 (ASM), located near the base of the South Mountains in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. SWCA, Inc. was requested to conduct the testing by Coe and Van Loo Consultants, Inc., of Phoenix, Arizona to determine the eligibility of the site for inclusion to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). A residential development has been proposed for the area including site AZ T:12:117 (ASM) that would result in the destruction of the site. Site AZ T:12:117 (ASM) is situated on private land. A final report detailing the results of the testing will be finalized upon the completion of artifact analysis and archival research.

Site AZ T:12:117 (ASM) consists of two features and seven historic trash concentrations that has been tentatively dated from the late nineteenth century to the early part of the twentieth century, and may represent a historic Pima or Maricopa occupation area. The site was originally recorded as AZ T:12:44 (ASU) during a corridor survey (Bostwick and Rice 1987), and was re-recorded during two later surveys (Grafil and Shaw 1999; Wenker and Mitchell 1999). The Arizona State Museum (ASM) site number was issued for the site as part of the recording process by Wenker and Mitchell (1999). Site AZ T:12:117 (ASM) was found to contain important data relating to the historic occupation of the region (Bostwick and Rice 1987:67), and was considered to be potentially eligible for inclusion to the NRHP under criterion d (Wenker and Mitchell 1999:10). Archaeological testing to determine the eligibility of site AZ T:12:117 (ASM) for inclusion to the NRHP was recommended if avoidance was not possible (Wenker and Mitchell 1999:10-11).

A testing plan outlining a program of fieldwork and archival research to determine the NRHP eligibility of AZ T:12:117 (ASM) was produced (Mitchell and Wenker 1999). The fieldwork included mapping, limited surface collection, backhoe trenching, and the excavation of hand test units. Archival research consisted of inspecting records of homestead, mining, survey notes, etc. at various institutions. The testing was designed to assess the content and integrity of site AZ T:12:117 (ASM), and whether the attributes present would make the site eligible for inclusion to the NRHP.
