POLLEN AND PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM AIS GIORKIS, CYPRUS

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 2018

Summary

Stratigraphic sediment samples were collected at Ais Giorkis for phytolith analysis. The uppermost sample serves as a modern analog, and radiocarbon ages indicate the profile is intact (Rolfe Mandel, personal communication, January 5, 2018). Phytolith analysis was requested because isotope values show a C3 signature with little variation through time (Rolfe Mandel, personal communication, January 5, 2018). Pollen analysis was recommended by PaleoResearch Institute staff as the better measure of vegetation variability through time, since it provides information on plants beyond grasses. In addition, we added XRF analysis of the sediments to learn whether or not elemental differences existed within this stratigraphic column.
