Archaeological Investigations at Pueblo Viejo: The Paradise Palms Component Phoenix, Arizona
Author(s): David R. Hart
Year: 2000
Summary
Northland Research, Inc. (Northland) has completed archaeological testing of a 6.4 acre parcel of private land for the Paradise Palms II development. The purpose of the testing was to determine the nature, extent, and potential significance of buried cultural resources within the Paradise Palms II parcel. The testing was necessary because the housing development is partially located within the recorded boundary of Pueblo Viejo, a large prehistoric Hohokam settlement that is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NHRP) (Zyniecki, 1995). Northland conducted the testing under Arizona State Museum (ASM) permit No. 2000-8BL and under authority of the City of Phoenix Department for Housing and Urban Development.
Backhoe trenching was the main exploratory method used to determine if buried archaeological features were present. Approximately 2% of the Paradise Palms II parcel was tested by placing trenches at systematic 20-meter intervals. Additional judgmental trenches were excavated to further define the distribution of subsurface features Artifact collections were restricted to objects that were considered temporally or functionally diagnostic. No human remains were encountered during the course of testing. Non-burial features were recorded as they were encountered, but not investigated further.
