Summary
On behalf of the Air Force/Air Mobility Command, Argonne National Laboratory completed a Phase I inventory of archaeological and historic resources of the 3,536-acre McGuire Air Force Base and five off-base facilities (Approach Lights site, Middle Marker site, BOMARC Missile Site, Gibbsboro Radar Station, and the Burlington Petroleum Off-Loading Facility) totaling 246.78 acres. Archaeological survey in March 1994 included a pedestrian survey and shovel-testing. The historic architectural survey included the assessment and NRHP evaluation of 14 facilities built prior to 1947, and one facility built during the Cold War. This study was completed in accordance with Section 110 of NHPA and the NJHPO guidelines for Phase I archeological survey.
Archaeological field investigations sampled six (6) cultural resource sensitivity areas, four (4) historic map-documented structure locations outside the sensitivity areas, and areas of high archaeological sensitivity within a 142-acre wooded parcel surrounding the BOMARC missile site. The Phase I survey completed approximately 410 shovel test pits at 50-foot (15-meter), 65-foot (20-meter), and 100-foot (30-meter) intervals to a depth of at least six (6) inches and recovered approximately 257 artifacts.
The archaeological survey did not identify potentially significant prehistoric archaeological resources. Data recovered from 8 of 11 map-documented structure locations represented potentially significant historic archaeological resources: Locations 9 (28BU473), 10 (28BU474), 29 (28BU458), 31 (28BU459), and 46 (28BU460); one site in the area of historic location 1-6 (28BU472); the Approach Lights site (28BU471); and the North Run refuse midden (site registration number not assigned). The study recommended protection of these eight sites from any ground-disturbing activities and additional archaeological investigation to evaluate their eligibility for New Jersey Pinelands Commission designations and/or the NRHP. No potentially significant archaeological resources were identified at Locations 42, 49, and 50.
The historic architectural survey assessed one Cold War Era facility, Building 1907 (SAGE), previously evaluated as NRHP-eligible based on its role during the Cold War. Fourteen (14) World War II era buildings (3401, 3402, 3422, 3423, 3427, 3428, 3434, 3435, 3446, 3450, 3464, 3507, 3542, and 3563) were recommend not NRHP-eligible either individually or as contributing elements of a historic district.
