Summary

The City of Tucson is considering construction of low-cost housing within a portion of Block 136 in downtown Tucson. A survey of the parcel found historic building remnants and surface artifacts and recommended archaeological testing should the City build on the property (Thiel 1998). In April 1999, the portion of Block 136 located west of Coleta A venue was tested by Desert Archaeology, Inc., revealing the remnants of a rowhouse, the foundation of a flush toilet building, and 14 nonarchitectural features. The nonarchitectural features included outhouse pits, cooking pits, and trash-filled pits (Dutt and Thiel 1999).

As a result of that testing, Block 136 was designated archaeological site AZ BB:13:513 (ASM) and was determined to meet eligibility requirements to the National Register of Historic Places (Dutt and Thiel 1999). The primary objectives of the testing program were: 1) to determine if intact archaeological remains were present; 2) to provide sufficient data on which to base an assessment of the significance of cultural resources within the project area and their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places; and 3) to provide sufficient data on which to base a plan for the appropriate treatment of any identified resources.

On 23 and 24 September, Andrew Dutt and Allison Diehl of Desert Archaeology, Inc. returned to the site to conduct archaeological testing on an additional portion of Block 136. Seven archaeological features were located in this area including outhouse pits, trash filled pits and a patio wall foundation. This portion of Block 136 is owned by the City of Tucson. This report, which supplements the report prepared for the portion of Block 136 (Dutt and Theil 1999), includes a summary of the methods and results of recent archaeological testing of the project area, an evaluation of National Register eligibility, and recommendations for data recovery.
