The Cave Buttes Excess Property Archaeological Project of Northern Maricopa County, Arizona
Author(s): James B. Rodgers
Year: 2000
Summary
Scientific Archeological Services has just completed an archeological inventory of a parcel of excess county land that is planned to be sold at public auction and, subsequently, developed according to provisions of a Clean Water Act Section 404 Permit. The concerned undertaking will therefore be one of the federal government, for it will necessarily involve activity of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The project parcel presently includes absolutely no land of the state of Arizona, however, and, instead, all of it is owned by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, the project sponsor.
Two major kinds of archeological compliance activity have been conducted by SAS during the present inventory. First, archival research has included both literature searches and different site record checks. They reveal the existence of no previously recorded cultural resources in or even close to the project area. Second, an intensive, or essentially complete (100%), field survey was performed of the entire project area. It was accomplished by walking a series of 116 linear swaths that were never wider than 20 m (65.6 ft) but did vary greatly in length. That survey results in having encountered no prehistoric sites. One late historic site (AZ T:8:105 ASM) and eight loci of isolated artifactual material were found and fully recorded, though. Arizona T:8:105 ASM is simply a chiseled stone monument that some unidentified land surveyor is believed to have established in 1936.
