Amerind Pleistocene Lake I, The Archaeology of the Willcox Playa

Summary

Our 1985 survey of the Willcox Playa environs resulted in a wealth of Archeological data, the findings of which are presented in the following chapters. We have added to the Archaic database from the Cazador through San Pedro stages of the Cochise sequence, and suggest a tentative Archaic settlement system integrated with local habitats and accompanying resources. Though it is a partial picture, the ceramic period settlement system is also beginning to emerge. Our knowledge of the early ceramic horizon has been greatly expanded. We have recovered several intrusive ceramic types including Mimbres Black-on-White pottery that demonstrates its westward distribution is much more extensive than is indicated by existing literature. The presence of Colorado Plateau utility ware has been established in the area for the first time, as far as we know.

Our survey data provide the firm foundation for developing future studies that may incorporate excavation. Although many problems relating to culture change or regional relationships can only be addressed with time/depth data from a number of sites, the value of the survey is in no way diminished. The survey is the means by which most problems are identified in the first place---the best way to assess archeological potential and to specify the particular areas or sites for additional study.
