Old Lakes and Young Playas: The Nellis AFB Geologic Study and Quaternary History of Four Playas on the Nevada Test and Training Range

Part of the Nellis Air Force Base (DRAFT) project

Author(s): Robert P. Dickerson

Year: 2006

Summary

Four playa basins in the northern part of the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR))—Mud Lake, Kawich Lake, Gold Flat, and Stonewall Flat, contain modern dry lake playas. Three of these playas are rimmed by shoreline deposits that developed during wetter climatic conditions of the past, and the fourth playa contains fossils typically associated with wetlands environments. Because it is known that native peoples inhabited the Great Basin during some of the past wetter climate cycles, defining the extent of these pluvial lakes can potentially assist researchers in locating archeological sites adjacent to these ancient lakes.
