Summary
This is an abstract from the session entitled "Plus Ultra: An examination of current research in Spanish Colonial/Iberian Underwater and Terrestrial Archaeology in the Western Hemisphere." , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.
In 2017, an expedition led by Dr. Dolores Elkin (National Research Council, Argentina) was undertaken to locate one of the oldest historic shipwrecks in the region of Tierra del Fuego. Bound from Cadiz, Spain to Lima, Peru on January 10, 1765 the Spanish Merchant Frigate, Purísima Concepción ran aground during foul weather approximately 14 miles from Cape Horn. While all 193-crew survived, the Purísima Concepción was lost. This paper will discuss the challenges associated with conducting a remote-sensing survey in the “Land of Fire”, as well as results of the magnetometer investigation conducted during the expedition.
