Summary

This is a paper/report submission presented at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

In this paper, we will apply the concept of Maritime Cultural Landscape (MCL) as a tool to evaluate the maritime heritage of Northwest Florida for a National Heritage Area (NHA) designation. We hypothesis that integration of MCL concept and NHA criteria can offer a unique management tool for coastal cultural heritage and local communities against the adversities of natural disasters. Since Northwest Florida is prone to hurricane and storms, and a large part of economy depends on tourism in this area, we need robust management plans that can help communities, cultural and natural entities to recover more quickly and effectively. The ultimate goal is to benefit from the MCL concept and justify the NHA designation for the maritime cultural landscape of Northwest Florida and designing a management plan that help protecting our cultural and natural resources for the benefit of local communities.
