The Geoarchaeological Potential of Elmendorf Air Force Base
Summary
In order to facilitate the surveying for archaeological sites on Elmendorf AFB, this report contains the following information: 1) A review of the geomorphology and geological history of the area, including a synthesis of the available geological literature concerning the area. 2). A surficial geological map of the area, including a detailed description of the map units involved. 3). A description of the landforms and deposits encountered in the area and their origins. The above information will help put any sites discovered into a temporal and environmental context, which will allow archaeologists to better understand the importance of these sites. This information also allowed for the following to be developed and included in the report as well: 4). A listing, prioritizing, and ranking of various localities on Elmendorf AFB for potential archaeological sites. 5). A map showing these localities arranged in an efficient manner for field surveying. 6). A discussion of the methods and justifications for the rankings of the various localities. 7). A reference list containing the relevant geological and ethnographical literature resources concerning Elmendorf AFB.
